Keeping the Island Store above water — for good

The Island Store on the shore of the Isle au Haut Thorofare, seen from the water

The Island Store has served Isle au Haut for more than fifty years. It sits in a flood plain, and the water is rising.

Welcome

The Friends of the Island Store is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization created to support the Island Store.

The Store is the year-round center of life on Isle au Haut. It sells groceries and essential goods, provides kerosene for heating homes and gasoline for island vehicles, carries produce, eggs and baked goods from island vendors, and hosts the gatherings that bring the community together through every season.

It is also vulnerable. The building sits on the Thorofare in a flood plain, and sea level is projected to rise up to one foot in five years, two feet in twenty-five, and six feet in seventy-five. The Friends exists to help the Store prepare for that future — and to help it through the lean winter months in the meantime.

How the Friends supports the Store

Resilience for the long term

Funding the engineering work, and eventually the construction, needed to secure the building and fuel system against storm surge and rising water — including the matching funds that State of Maine infrastructure grants require.

Steadiness through the winter

Interim support so the Store can pay its bills in the months when revenues are low. Last winter a sharp rise in kerosene prices required immediate payment for an extra delivery; community giving carried the Store through it.
